Budget by finish complexity
Broad 2026 planning estimates often fall around $10–$20 or more per square foot for stamped concrete. These are estimates, not quotes or verified Lubbock averages. Borders, multiple colors, intricate patterns and limited access can exceed the range. Confirm whether the price includes the slab preparation and first sealer application.
| Decorative scope | 2026 planning estimate |
|---|
| Simpler stamped finish | $10–$15 per sq ft |
| More detailed pattern or color work | $15–$20+ per sq ft |
| 300 sq ft at $10–$20 | $3,000–$6,000+ |
Choose color with realistic expectations
Integral color, surface hardeners and release products produce different effects. Ask which method the pro proposes and how the finished surface will be sealed. Photos help choose a direction, but sunlight, texture and sealer sheen can make the same color look different on your property.
Ask for a sample or completed-work examples that the pro can legitimately show. Agree on the acceptable amount of variation before the pour. Decorative concrete is not factory tile; handwork and weather affect appearance. Perfectly uniform color should not be the only definition of a successful installation.
Pattern planning still needs good concrete work
Lay out borders, joints and transitions before concrete arrives. Narrow leftover strips or abrupt pattern cuts can be distracting. Ask how control joints align with the stamp design and when they will be cut. Stamping does not eliminate shrinkage or the need for a stable compacted base.
Lubbock hot, windy conditions can shorten the finishing window. Ask about crew size, placement sequence and weather decisions. A large decorative pour has more timing demands than a small plain pad. Confirm how the pro prevents surface drying and what curing method is compatible with the color system.
Count the maintenance and traction tradeoffs
Sealers wear under weather, furniture and foot traffic. Ask what product is being used, how to clean it and what signs mean it needs maintenance. Too much sealer can create appearance or traction problems. Around pools, steps and shaded wet areas, discuss texture and a compatible traction treatment.
Repairs to stamped patterns and color can remain visible. Ask how later cracking or damage will be handled rather than expecting an invisible patch.
