Size a basic patio before adding extras
The table uses broad 2026 planning estimates of $7–$12 per square foot for a basic broom-finished patio with ordinary preparation and access. These are estimates, not quotes. Tiny jobs can carry minimum charges, and demolition, steps or decorative finishes may be extra. Measure usable space after allowing for door swings and furniture.
| Patio dimensions | 2026 planning estimate |
|---|
| 10 × 12 ft: 120 sq ft | $840–$1,440 before minimums |
| 12 × 20 ft: 240 sq ft | $1,680–$2,880 |
| 20 × 20 ft: 400 sq ft | $2,800–$4,800 |
Set the elevation at the house carefully
The patio needs drainage away from the building while preserving sensible door thresholds and wall clearances. Ask the pro to check those elevations before forming. Adding concrete too high against the house can create water and maintenance problems. An existing flat yard does not guarantee a workable runoff route.
Discuss connections near an existing slab or foundation. The joint detail should account for movement rather than casually tying every piece together. If a patio cover or heavy masonry feature is planned, mention it now; its support needs may differ from ordinary flatwork.
Choose the finish for actual use
Broom finishes offer a straightforward outdoor surface. Stamping and coloring change labor, maintenance and cost. Ask about traction when wet, how hot the surface may feel in sun and how furniture feet will sit on textured patterns. A small sample helps compare appearance, but the final slab can still vary.
West Texas heat and wind influence placement and curing. Ask how the installer protects fresh concrete and what weather would postpone the pour. Plan joints around the shape of the patio and nearby posts. Decorative pattern lines do not automatically serve as control joints.
Keep future work from breaking the budget
Before concrete arrives, decide whether lighting, irrigation sleeves or utility work should be coordinated by the appropriate trades. Changing a buried route later can mean cutting finished concrete. Keep planned grill equipment and roof runoff in mind when locating drains and walking paths.
Ask whether the quote includes yard access repair, excess soil disposal and moving sprinkler heads.
