Convert length into actual area
Multiply length by width to get square feet. A 40-foot path at four feet wide is 160 square feet, not 40. Broad 2026 planning estimates for basic new residential walkway work may run $7–$12 per square foot, before small-job minimums. These are estimates, not quotes; demolition, steps and public sidewalk requirements can cost more.
| Walkway example | 2026 planning estimate |
|---|
| 3 × 30 ft: 90 sq ft | $630–$1,080 before minimums |
| 4 × 40 ft: 160 sq ft | $1,120–$1,920 |
| 4 × 60 ft: 240 sq ft | $1,680–$2,880 |
Lay out the route for real movement
Consider visitors, trash carts, garden equipment and how doors open onto the path. A route that is too narrow at a gate can defeat a wider walkway elsewhere. Mark the layout on the ground and walk it before forming. Ask about passing space or a landing where the route changes direction.
Accessible routes and public sidewalks have requirements beyond ordinary backyard paths. Confirm applicable width, slope, cross-slope and landing requirements with the responsible authority or designer. Do not assume a generic residential quote includes compliance review for a public-facing entrance.
Handle roots, drainage and transitions
Look at tree roots and irrigation before choosing the final alignment. Cutting major roots can harm a tree and may not prevent future movement. Ask whether routing around the tree is more practical. Mark private irrigation lines and identify where runoff will go when the new concrete blocks an old flow path.
The ends need as much thought as the middle. Check connections to driveways, stoops and existing walks for abrupt height changes. In Lubbock’s flat terrain, small elevation errors can leave a puddle across the route. Ask the installer to check drainage before setting forms.
Specify a durable walking surface
Ask for suitable base preparation, thickness, reinforcement if needed, joint spacing and an outdoor finish with useful traction. Long narrow strips need thoughtful joint planning. Hot wind can dry fresh edges quickly, so curing and weather protection belong in the proposal.
Keep people and pets off the work for the period the installer specifies. Ask how landscape edges and sprinkler heads will be restored. We are a free referral service, not a sidewalk contractor. Independent local pros inspect and quote the project; compare total scope and any permit or right-of-way responsibilities before choosing who to hire.
