Budget for the whole replacement
Broad 2026 planning estimates for typical driveway replacement run about $10–$18 per square foot, including ordinary removal. These are estimates, not quotes. Thick reinforced concrete, restricted access and substantial excavation can push costs higher. Compare complete replacement prices rather than adding demolition to a rate that already includes it.
| Replacement area | 2026 planning estimate |
|---|
| 400 sq ft | $4,000–$7,200 |
| 600 sq ft | $6,000–$10,800 |
| 1,000 sq ft | $10,000–$18,000 |
Ask what demolition will disturb
Old driveways may contain thicker sections, buried reinforcement or patches that are difficult to see beforehand. Ask how unexpected thickness is priced and whether disposal charges are included. Mark irrigation, private utilities and drains. Public utility locating does not necessarily identify every privately installed line.
Agree on saw-cut boundaries where the work meets a garage floor, sidewalk or section that stays. Protecting those edges helps avoid a ragged patch later. Discuss debris storage, truck access and whether vehicles will be blocked in the garage during removal and curing.
Use the exposed base as a checkpoint
Once concrete is removed, soft ground, voids or uncontrolled fill may become visible. The quote should explain how the pro handles that discovery. Ask for a price basis and written approval before extra excavation begins. Covering an unstable base with fresh concrete can repeat the original failure.
Lubbock clay and variable caliche make lot-specific preparation useful. Ask whether base material will be imported, how it will be compacted and what elevations guide the work. Photographs before placement help document reinforcement, base conditions and drain locations that disappear beneath the slab.
Set expectations for the finished driveway
Write down thickness, reinforcement, finish, control joints and transitions. If you are widening the drive, confirm any applicable apron or right-of-way requirements before demolition. Match the layout to actual vehicle loads and turning movements. A new surface should solve the access problem that prompted the replacement.
Arrange parking away from the work and get a curing schedule from the installer. We provide free referrals to independent local pros; we are not the demolition or concrete contractor. Ask the selected pro about workmanship terms, drainage responsibilities and how unexpected work will be authorized.
